What is a doula?

What areas do you serve?

The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

I serve any home birth within a 40 mile radius of Lilburn, Ga. I attend births at Dekalb Medical, North Fulton, Gwinnett Medical, Atlanta Medical, Piedmont, Northside and Emory Hospital.

I am a DONA certified birth doula, and holds a certificate as a Hypnobabies®Childbirth Hypnosis-Doula and Stillbirthday Birth and Bereavement Doula.

Why do I need a doula if I will have a labor and delivery nurse?

The labor and delivery nurse is a great resource to have around when you are having your baby. However, the labor and delivery nurse has other clinical duties to perform, paperwork, as well as other patients to attend to. These other duties limits the amount of time the nurse can stay with you. A doula provides continuous care through nursing staff changes and only has the mother's emotional and physical needs in mind, suggesting ways to progress in labor and addressing any issues that may arise.

Do you only attend drug free births or home births?

No, I have been trained to support you and your partner through the delivery of your baby and immediate postpartum recovery period.  Whether you are scheduled for a cesarean, have chosen to deliver in a hospital with pain medication or you have chosen a water birth at home, I am here to support you in the decisions you have made where ever that may take you.

What is the difference between a birth doula and a postpartum doula?

A birth doula accompanies a woman in childbirth and helps her through the delivery of her baby. The birth doula also offers support in the immediate postpartum recovery period. You will have had access to the birth doula prior to delivery and may have met a few times to discuss your options and birth wishes. A postpartum doula helps you makes the transition into parenthood at home by offering assistance with newborn care, breastfeeding support, soothing techniques and more. A postpartum doula may be hired for a few days up to several weeks after you bring your baby home.

Will my insurance company cover a doula?

Not likely, some insurance companies will reimburse the cost of doula care. Please talk with your health insurance provider. There are forms available to submit if this is an option for you.  If you have a flexible spending account used for non-covered medical expenses, doula care may be considered an appropriate expense for reimbursement from a pretax / health savings account.
